Camberwell Fresh Food Market still an icon

Camberwell Fresh Food Market

The Camberwell Fresh Food Market has been part of the shopping precinct’s identity and character for more than 85 years.

Established in the 1930s, the market sells a range of quality fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood, flowers and other gourmet food.
Steeped in history, the site was originally a horse carriage factory that later become a produce market and serviced the market growers of the area.

An unfortunate fire damaged most of the market in 1992 and stall holders had to trade from temporary premises while the market was being repaired.

In 2002, the market was renovated giving it a new look, and an entrance from the rear carpark provided better access for shoppers.
The market’s history is still alive and thriving today, and many stall holders are second and third generation, family-run businesses that continue to trade in the traditional style.

Since 2013, the City of Boroondara has carried out works to revitalise the iconic market.

The market underwent major renovations in late 2014 and reopened in February 2015 with a fresh look including new floor and wall finishes in some areas, signage to shops, new traders and a relocated fruit and vegetable section.

Lighting, public toilets, a covered walkway and external paving have also been improved as part of upgrade works. There is now an expanded paved footpath, new street furniture and plantings to the south end of Station St, adjacent to the northern entrance to the market.

This year, a canopy was erected along the façade facing Riversdale Rd and a new electrical substation was recently installed opposite the market’s northern entrance.

With all the improvements, the Camberwell Fresh Food Market will continue to provide locals and visitors a vibrant atmosphere to shop for the finest selection of fresh produce.

The market is located at 519-523 Riversdale Rd, Camberwell.
